EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE

Explosive Atmosphere / LEL % Calculator

LEL = Lower Explosive Limit (also Lower Flammable Limit, LFL)  |  UEL = Upper Explosive Limit. Converts between a gas detector's %LEL reading and the actual gas concentration (% by volume), and classifies the reading against common confined-space action levels.
Important: A reading below 10% LEL is not automatically safe — it can indicate an active, worsening release. LEL/UEL values shift with temperature, pressure, and oxygen concentration, and differ between reference standards (e.g., US/NFPA vs. IEC 60079). Always use your specific gas detector's calibration gas and your site's documented confined space / hot work procedure as the definitive reference.

Formula Reference

% LEL Reading = (Gas Concentration, % vol ÷ Gas LEL, % vol) × 100
Gas Concentration (% vol) = (% LEL Reading ÷ 100) × Gas LEL (% vol)

Common Action Levels (Confined Space / Hot Work)

< 10% LELBelow the general action threshold — continue monitoring; not automatically "safe"
10–24% LELHazardous atmosphere per common OSHA confined-space guidance — ventilate, investigate source, restrict entry
≥ 25% LELCommon evacuation / alarm trigger — do not enter, evacuate immediately
Many confined space entry programs are stricter still, requiring readings below 1% LEL before entry is authorized. Always follow your site's specific documented procedure.
